California lawmakers are starting to get ready for a new automotive era, during which the first self-driving cars will hit the roads. California state Sen. Alex Padilla has introduced SB1298, which would establish guidelines for such "autonomous vehicles" to be tested and operated in California.

Borrowing up as buyers eye autos, education
Consumer borrowing in the United States rose more than forecast in January, capping the biggest three-month gain in more than a decade, as demand for autos improved and Americans sought more education. Job openings continued to increase.

Japanese shares jump with autos higher
SYDNEY (MarketWatch) -- Japanese shares jumped in early trading, with the Nikkei Stock Average up 1.1% at 9,678.85. The gains for the index came as automakers advanced, with Mazda Motor Corp. up 1.6% and Honda Motor Co. up 1.5%.
